Tirana, January 27, 2011 NOA/ Ervin Tirana - In the framework of his official visit in Tirana, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Haxhinasto received and held talks today with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malta, Mr. Tonio Borg. The talks focused on the very good performance of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, Albania’s European integration, the latest developments in the region and wider. Minister Haxhinasto commended Malta’s ongoing and sincere support for each and every stage of the process of reform implementation, the progress of Albania’s European integration and in particular, its support in the visa liberalization process for Albanian citizens. In his turn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, while praising Albania’s constructive role and policy in the region gave the assurances for the continuity of his country’s support in view if granting the EU candidate status to Albania. In the context of stepping up political relations, both interlocutors agreed on the further intensification of the exchange of visits at all levels as well as on signing the Treaty of Friendship soon. In the context of the further deepening and institutionalization of diplomatic cooperation, both Ministers expressed their readiness to work on drafting and signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries. Likewise, they talked and agreed to enhance and intensify the bilateral cooperation at all areas of mutual benefit, as in the field of economy, tourism, education, information technologies through the ongoing enrichment of the legal frame, the organization of joint fora and the promotion and intensification of contacts among the institutions of our countries. Special attention was devoted to the cooperation in the field of the digitalization of governmental e- services, an area where Malta ranks as a leading country in Europe. Inn the multilateral context, both interlocutors confirmed their readiness and commitment to step up cooperation in the international organizations, as in the UN, OSCE, and others, to support mutual candidacies and strengthen their partnership in the Euro – Mediterranean area. At the end of their talks, both Ministers signed the Agreement between the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania and the Government of the Republic of Malta on the mutual protection and promotion of investments as well as the Protocol between the two countries for the implementation of the Readmission Agreement between Republic of Albania and the European Community for the readmission of persons with unauthorized stay.
