Tirana, February 8 2011 NOA – The U.S. Embassy in Tirana wishes to clarify statements made by Ambassador Arvizu during his interview on the Voice of America newscast which aired on Saturday, February 5, 2011. Speaking about corruption in Albania, he said, “The other point I would make is that corruption is an Albanian problem; it’s not [only] an Albanian government problem – it’s a pervasive part of society….”
As Ambassador Arvizu has said before, corruption is a problem that has invaded the cornerstones of Albanian society – government, business, education, health care, and others. The Albanian people deserve better. The United States continues to call on Albanian leaders to take decisive action against corruption.
