Amnesty International calls today’s conviction by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (the Tribunal) of Momčilo Perišić, a former Chief of the General Staff of the Yugoslav Army, a strong victory for victims and their families in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Momčilo Perišić was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for crimes under international law committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. He was sentenced to 27 years of imprisonment. “The conviction is a clear victory for justice. However, with the ICTY completing its work in 2014, it is up to the national courts in the countries of former Yugoslavia to investigate and prosecute several thousand unresolved cases from the wars in the 1990s,” said Nicola Duckworth, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Programme at Amnesty International. “The major obstacle for tackling impunity and bringing the perpetrators to justice is lack of political will to investigate and prosecute those crimes.”
